In the town of Canton, which is located in St. Lawrence County, New York, you'll find the private liberal arts college known as St. Lawrence University. About 2,400 students are enrolled in the undergraduate programme, and 100 are enrolled in the graduate programme. The founders of the Universalist Church, who were interested in establishing a seminary west of New England and were avidly courted by the inhabitants of Canton, established what is now known as St. Lawrence University in 1856, despite the fact that it is a non-denominational university today. However, the church almost decided not to locate the school in Canton because they were concerned that the pupils may be exposed to an excessive amount of "excitement" inside the boundaries of the community in 1856. The denomination, which has since merged with the Unitarian faith, was a part of the liberal wing of Protestantism, and it championed such ideas as critical thinking and sex equality. These are characteristics that surfaced in the new Theological School of St. Lawrence University, which was progressive in its teaching philosophy and coeducational from the very beginning.
