Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) is a private research university that has its main campus in Troy, New York. It also has campuses in Hartford and Groton, both located in the state of Connecticut. It is the oldest technological university in both the English-speaking world and the Western Hemisphere. It was founded in 1824 by Stephen van Rensselaer and Amos Eaton for the purpose of "applying science to the common purposes of life." Rensselaer has served as an inspiration for a great number of colleges and departments of applied sciences in the United States. The campus of the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, which covers a total area of 265 acres and 107 hectares and was constructed on a hillside, looks out over the city of Troy as well as the Hudson River. Both an on-campus business incubator and the 1,250-acre (510 ha) Rensselaer Technology Park are under the administration of the institute. RPI is comprised of six primary schools, each of which is comprised of 37 departments, with a primary focus on scientific research and technological development. It is recognised for its degree programmes in engineering, computing, business and management, information technology, design, and the liberal arts, and it is categorised as one of the "R1: Doctoral Universities: Very High Research Activity." As of the year 2017, RPI's faculty and alumni included a Nobel Prize winner in Physics, six members of the National Inventors Hall of Fame, six National Medal of Technology winners, five National Medal of Science winners, eight Fulbright Scholarship recipients, and 86 members of the National Academy of Engineering. Additionally, 17 members of the National Academy of Sciences, 25 members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, eight members of the National Academy of Medicine, and 86 members of the National Academy of Medicine are also RPI faculty or Since 1970, RPI has consistently been placed among the top 50 universities in the United States.
