ABOUT

The University (SMU) is a public university in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, that used to be Catholic. Saint Mary's is Canada's first Roman Catholic university and the second oldest English-speaking school in the country. In 1840, the Nova Scotia Legislature gave Saint Mary's the right to give degrees. Eleven years later, the university was given official legal status. As the college grew quickly, the Windsor Street campus became too small. In 1943, the Gorsebrook Golf Club was bought to replace it.
