ABOUT

Cape Breton Institution (CBU) is a public university in Sydney, Nova Scotia, Canada that admits students of both sexes and focuses largely on undergraduate education. Within the boundaries of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality and located on Cape Breton Island, it is the only post-secondary educational establishment that awards degrees. The Cape Breton University Act, which was approved by the Nova Scotia House of Assembly, made it possible for the university to be established. Prior to this, the University College of Cape Breton Act was what made it possible for CBU to exist (amended). The University College of Cape Breton was granted its coat of arms on May 27, 1995, and it was registered with the Canadian Heraldic Authority at that time. CBU is a regular (full) member of Colleges and Institutes Canada, Colleges and Institutes Canada, the Association of Atlantic Universities, and Universities Canada. In addition, CBU is a full member of the Canadian Bureau for International Education (CICan).
