ABOUT

Providence, Rhode Island is home to a prestigious private art and design institution known as the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). Helen Adelia Rowe Metcalf, who wanted to broaden the opportunities available to women in the field of design education, established the school in 1877 as an institution that welcomed students of both sexes. About 2,000 undergraduates and 500 graduate students are now enrolled at RISD, which currently provides bachelor's and master's degree programmes in a total of 19 academic disciplines. One of the largest collegiate art museums in the United States is located on the campus of the Rhode Island School of Design and serves as a repository for the institution's art and design collections. The Rhode Island School of Design is a part of Brown University, the campus of which is located right next to that of RISD on College Hill in Providence. Cross-registration has been allowed between the two organisations since the year 1900 so that they can pool their social and community resources. The Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) and Brown University have collaborated to present dual degree programmes at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. As of the year 2022, graduates of the Rhode Island School of Design have been honoured with a total of ten MacArthur Genius fellowships, five Primetime Emmy Awards, and three Academy Awards.  In 2016, researchers revealed that the vast majority of the most successful American painters at auction have undergraduate degrees from the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD).
