The primary campus of New Mexico State University, also known as NMSU or NM State, is located in Las Cruces, New Mexico, in the United States. NMSU and NM State are both abbreviations for the same institution. The New Mexico State University is the oldest public institution of higher education in the state of New Mexico. It was established on September 17, 1888. It is considered to be one of the two leading universities in the state of New Mexico. A total of 21,874 students were enrolled across all campuses as of the end of the 2017 academic year. The university has branch campuses in Alamogordo, Carlsbad, Doa Ana County, and Grants, in addition to extension and research centres located throughout the state of New Mexico. It was initially known as the Las Cruces College when it was established in 1888; the following year, it changed its name to the New Mexico College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts and was designated as a Land Grant college. It wasn't until 1960 that it was given its current name. As of the Fall 2017 semester, New Mexico State University had a total enrollment of 24,580 students and a faculty-to-student ratio of approximately 1 to 16. Through its main campus and four community colleges, New Mexico State University (NMSU) offers a diverse selection of academic programmes and confers associate, bachelor's, master's, and doctoral degrees. There are a total of 96 baccalaureate majors, 58 master's degree programmes, and 28 doctoral degree programmes available at New Mexico State University. It is categorised as an R2 university, which stands for "Doctoral Universities – High Research Activity." With the exception of football, all of New Mexico State's other athletic teams compete at the Division I level of the NCAA and are members of the Western Athletic Conference.
