Frostburg State University, also known simply as FSU, is a public institution of higher education located in Frostburg, Maryland. Within the state's Appalachian highlands, this university is the only four-year institution that is part of the University System of Maryland that is located west of the Baltimore-Washington corridor. Frostburg was established in 1898 by John Leake, who was a state senator in Maryland. The location of the town was chosen because it provided the state with the finest possible location at no additional cost. At the present time, the establishment mostly functions as a residential university. The university has roughly 4,858 students enrolled, and it provides students with the opportunity to pursue one of 47 different undergraduate majors, 16 different graduate degrees, or even a PhD in educational leadership. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education has granted the university accreditation, and the university focuses a primary emphasis on its position as an educational and instructional institution.
