Alcorn State University, also known as Alcorn State, Alcorn University, or simply Alcorn, is a public historically black land-grant university that is located adjacent to the unincorporated community of Lorman, Mississippi. It was the first Black land grant college to be established in the United States and was established in 1871 when it was founded. Medgar Evers, a prominent civil rights activist, graduated from Alcorn State University in 1952, making him one of the school's most notable alumni. In the middle of the twentieth century, students and alumni of the college were active participants in the Civil Rights Movement, during which they worked to register voters and put an end to inequality in the United States. The Thurgood Marshall College Fund counts the university as one of its member institutions. The athletic programmes at Alcorn State University are known as the Braves, and they compete in Division I of the NCAA. Every single team is a part of the Southwestern Athletic Conference and competes there (SWAC).
