The University of Western Ontario (UWO) operates as a public research university in London and is also known as Western University or Western. University is located in Ontario, Canada, on 455 hectares (1,120 acres) of land. The University is bisected at the campus's eastern portion by the Thames River and surrounded by residential neighborhoods. The University functions through twelve academic schools and faculties. It is a member of a group of research-intensive universities in Canada, well known as the U15. The University was founded and established on 7 March 1878 as the Western University of London, Ontario, by Bishop Isaac Hellmuth of the Anglican Diocese of Huron. Western is a co-educational university with over 306,000 living alums worldwide and more than 24,000 students. Notable alums include government officials, business leaders, academics, distinguished fellows, Nobel Laureates and Rhodes Scholars. Western's varsity teams compete in the Ontario University Athletics conference of U Sports and are popularly known as the Western Mustangs.
