The Institution of Westminster is a public university in London, United Kingdom, with an emphasis on providing instruction to the general public. It was the first polytechnic to ever open its doors in London and was established in 1838 under the name Royal Polytechnic Institution. In August of 1839, the Polytechnic was presented with an official Royal charter. In 1992, the institution was renamed the University of Westminster. The primary campus of Westminster is located on Regent Street in the heart of London. The university also maintains campuses in Fitzrovia, Marylebone, and Harrow. In addition to that, it runs the Westminster International University in Tashkent, which is located in the country of Uzbekistan. Within the university's three colleges and 12 schools are approximately 65 departments and centres, some of which are the Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI) and the Centre for the Study of Democracy. The university is also home to the Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI). In addition to these, it possesses a Business School, a Law School, and a Policy Studies Institute. In the 2017–2018 fiscal year, Westminster brought in a total of 205.1 million pounds, with £22 million of that coming from financial grants, research awards, and contracts. The university is a participant in the European University Association, the European Federation for Management Development (EFMD), the European Association of MBAs, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities. Alumni of Westminster include an individual who was awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine, the person who came up with the idea for cordite, heads of state, politicians and mayors, Olympians, scientists, BAFTA- and Oscar-winning filmmakers, Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees, Grammy Award-winning musicians, journalists, and poets. Westminster was founded in 1832.
