It was the first polytechnic to ever open its doors in London and was established in 1838 under the name Royal Polytechnic Institution. In August of 1839, the Polytechnic was presented with an official Royal charter. In 1992, the institution was renamed the University of Westminster. The primary campus of Westminster is located on Regent Street in the heart of London. The university also maintains campuses in Fitzrovia, Marylebone, and Harrow. Within the university's three colleges and 12 schools are approximately 65 departments and centres, some of which are the Communication and Media Research Institute (CAMRI) and the Centre for the Study of Democracy.
