VINCENNES UNIVERSITY

Vincennes University, sometimes known as VU, is a public institution of higher education with its primary campus located in Vincennes, Indiana. VU is the oldest public school of higher learning in the state of Indiana. It was was established in 1801 and named Jefferson Academy. VU was the only publicly funded four-year university in the state of Indiana until the formation of Indiana University in 1820. It was chartered in 1806 as the four-year university for the Indiana Territory and remained so until that year. In 1889, the state of Indiana granted Vincennes Institution a charter as a two-year university. Between the years 1999 and 2005, Vincennes University participated in a relationship that was mandated by the state with what is now known as Ivy Tech Community College. In 2005, VU started granting bachelor degrees to its students. The Vincennes location of the University of Notre Dame features a residential campus that is tucked away on the banks of the Wabash River. Other locations for the University of Visual Arts and Design include a campus in Jasper, Indiana; the Center for Advanced Manufacturing and Logistics in Fort Branch, Indiana; and centres for Aviation, Logistics, Advanced Manufacturing, and American Sign Language in the surrounding area of Indianapolis.
