ABOUT

Valparaiso Institution (Valpo) is a private university located in Valparaiso, Indiana. On its 350-acre campus, this is a Lutheran university that has over 3,000 students hailing from over 50 different nations (140 ha). There are five colleges for undergraduates and one graduate school at Valpo. The Chapel of the Resurrection, located there, is the collegiate chapel that is ranked as the second-largest in all of the world. Valparaiso University was established in 1859 as one of the first universities in the United States to welcome both male and female students. It was first known as Valparaiso Male and Female College. The college was compelled to close its doors in 1871 as a result of the setbacks that were caused by the American Civil War. Two years later, educator Henry Baker Brown gave it a new lease on life by reviving it and renaming it the Northern Indiana Normal School and Business Institute. Brown rechristened the institution as Valparaiso College around the start of the 20th century, and not long after that, it was rechartered as Valparaiso University. The Lutheran University Association purchased the school in 1925 after it had been initially established by Methodists. The Association is still in charge of running it as of now.
