The city of York, England is home to the prestigious University of York, which functions as both a teaching and research institution. The university first opened its doors in 1963, and since then it has grown to include more than thirty departments and centres that address a wide variety of topics. The university campus spans an area that is approximately 500 acres (200 hectares) in size and is located to the south-east of the city of York. The old campus, which is now known as Campus West, is notable for its abundance of animals, campus lakes, and greenery. It is also home to the York Science Park as well as the National Science Learning Centre. The university received authorization in May 2007 to construct an addition to its primary campus on agricultural land located immediately to the east of the neighbouring community of Heslington. Campus East, the university's second campus, opened its doors for business in 2009 and is now home to four colleges, three departments, as well as a sports village, conference rooms, and a "incubator" for new business ventures. In addition, the organisation is the lessee of King's Manor, which is located in the heart of York. In the fiscal year 2020/21, the university brought in a total revenue of £403.6 million, with research grants and contracts contributing £69.8 million to this total.
