Worcester, Massachusetts is home to the prestigious private research institution that is Clark University. Clark University was one of the first modern research universities in the United States. It was established in 1887 and received a sizeable endowment from Jonas Gilman Clark, a prominent businessman who also gave the university its name. Having begun as a school for graduate students only, Clark University admitted its first undergraduates in 1902 and admitted its first female students in 1942.
