Located in Buzzards Bay, Massachusetts, the Massachusetts Maritime Academy, sometimes known as Mass Maritime or MMA, is a public institution that focuses on maritime-related subjects of study. It is the United States' second-oldest state maritime academy and was founded in 1891, making it the nation's second-oldest such institution. The academy's original mission was to educate deck and engineering officers for the United States Merchant Marine; however, it has since broadened the scope of its educational offerings. Some graduates go on to serve in the active or reserve components of the United States Armed Forces, despite the fact that this is not a requirement for graduation. The USS Kennedy serves as a training vessel for students aboard the academy.
