ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF DELAWARE
The University of Delaware is a public land-grant research university with its main campus in Newark, Delaware (often known as UD, UDel, or Delaware). The biggest university in Delaware is UD. Through its eight colleges, it provides three associate's programmes, 148 bachelor's programmes, 121 master's programmes (including 13 joint degrees), and 55 doctorate programmes. With satellite campuses in Dover, the Wilmington region, Lewes, and Georgetown, the main campus is located in Newark. With around 18,200 undergraduate and 4,200 graduate students, it is regarded as a significant institution. It is a privately run university that receives public money as a result of being a state-funded research institution with land-grant, sea-grant, and space-grant status. R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity is how UD is categorised. UD spent $186 million on research and development in 2018, placing it 119th in the country, according to the National Science Foundation. The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching has classified it under community engagement. Only four universities in North America offer a degree in art conservation, including the University of Delaware. It was the first university in America to provide a study abroad programme in 1923. The "Free School" that was established in New London, Pennsylvania in 1743 is where UD got its start. By 1765, the institution had moved to Newark, Delaware, where it became the Newark Academy. The academy became a part of the college after the academy trustees successfully negotiated a charter for Newark College in 1833. The college later changed its name to Delaware College in 1843. Because it was not a university with a charter during the colonial era, it is not regarded as one of the colonial colleges, although its initial class of ten students included George Read, Thomas McKean, and James Smith, all of whom later signed the Declaration of Independence. Read later put his signature to the US Constitution.
