The Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) is a private research institution that is located in the community of Henrietta within the Rochester metropolitan area in the state of New York. The institution confers degrees at both the undergraduate and graduate levels, as well as doctorates, professional degrees, and master's degrees that can be completed online. The institution of higher learning was established in 1829 and currently ranks as the tenth most populous full-time student body of any private university in the United States. It is known all over the world for its science, computer, engineering, and art programmes, as well as for its National Technical Institute for the Deaf, which is a leading deaf-education institution that offers educational opportunities to more than one thousand deaf and hard-of-hearing students. All of these programmes and the National Technical Institute for the Deaf have contributed to the university's international reputation. The Co-op programme at RIT is well-known for providing students with professional and industry experience during their time there. It has the world's fourth-oldest cooperative education programme and is consistently ranked among the largest of its kind. It is categorised as an R2 university, which stands for "Doctoral Universities - High Research Activity." There are roughly 19,000 students enrolled at RIT, including approximately 16,000 undergraduate students and 3,000 graduate students. In terms of population, students come from each of the fifty states that make up the United States as well as from more than one hundred different countries. More than 4,000 members of the university's teaching and support staff are actively involved in a variety of academic endeavours and collaborative initiatives with the student body at this institution. Additionally, it operates worldwide campuses in China, Croatia, Kosovo, and the United Arab Emirates. These locations are referred to as its overseas branches (Dubai). Eleven graduates and faculty members of RIT have been awarded the Pulitzer Prize, bringing the total number of prizes won by RIT individuals to 15.
