Founded in 1913, it is one of the University System of Georgia's four research universities. Around 54,000 students, including approximately 33,000 undergraduate and graduate students at the main campus downtown, are enrolled at this university, making it the largest institution of higher education in terms of enrollment that is based in the state of Georgia. "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity" is the category that Georgia State University is placed in. For the third year in a row, the university's research expenditures of more than $200 million for the 2018 fiscal year placed it in first place in the nation among universities that do not have a school of engineering, medicine, or agriculture. The university is the most comprehensive public institution in Georgia, offering more than 250 degree programmes in over 100 different areas of study across its 10 academic colleges and schools, making it the state's most all-encompassing educational establishment. There are two libraries at Georgia State: the University Library, which is divided between Library North and Library South on the main campus as well as among the campuses of the Perimeter College, and the Law Library, which is located on the main campus. Both of these libraries are designated as federal document depositories and have a combined collection of over 13 million items.
