ABOUT NORTHERN ARIZONA UNIVERSITY
Flagstaff, Arizona is home to Northern Arizona University (NAU), a public research university with its main campus located there. It was established in 1899 as the last public university to be established in what was then the Arizona Territory. This was 13 years prior to Arizona becoming the 48th state in the union. NAU is one of three universities in the state of Arizona that are overseen by the Arizona Board of Regents and are accredited by the Higher Learning Commission. NAU is also a member of the Association of Public and Land-grant Universities (APLU). NAU had a total enrollment of 28,718 students as of the fall semester of 2021, with 21,248 of those students attending the Flagstaff campus. There are a total of eight colleges that make up the university, and together they confer approximately 130 undergraduate degrees, 100 graduate degrees, and a variety of academic certificates. Students can take classes and conduct research in Flagstaff, online, and at more than 20 statewide locations, including the Phoenix Biomedical Campus. The university is categorised as "R2: Doctoral Universities – High research activity," and it holds the 191st spot in the national research rankings published by the National Science Foundation (NSF) for the year 2019. The 2021 edition of the U.S. News Best Colleges Ranking places it at position 57 on the list of the most innovative colleges in the country. The NAU astronomy faculty is responsible for the co-discovery of a number of astronomical bodies, such as Eris and Sedna, and they play a significant role in the hunt for the fictitious planet known as Planet Nine. In addition, the university serves as a primary institution for the Lowell Observatory. Hispanic Serving Institution is a designation that the federal government has bestowed upon NAU. The Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks participate in NCAA Division I competition, largely as a member of the Big Sky Conference. They have been victorious in a number of national championships, most notably in the sport of cross country running. The school's athletic facilities, which are located at an elevation of 6,950 feet (2,120 metres) above sea level, are used by Olympic athletes and professional athletes from throughout the world for prestige high altitude training.
