In the city of Fairfax, Virginia, there is a prestigious private university known as Fairfax University of America (FXUA), which was once known as Virginia International University. 1998 marked the beginning of its existence, and in 1999 it was designated as a 501(c)(3) university. The State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV) has granted the university permission to operate in the state of Virginia, and the Accrediting Council for Independent Colleges and Schools has granted the university accreditation to confer certificates, bachelor's degrees, and master's degrees. The university is able to award all three types of degrees.
