Massachusetts's own University of Massachusetts The town of Dartmouth, Massachusetts is home to the public research university known as Dartmouth. It is the campus in the University of Massachusetts system that is located furthest to the south. It was formerly known as Southeastern Massachusetts University (often abbreviated as SMU in the area), but in 1991 it became a part of the University of Massachusetts system. The campus has a total enrollment of 8,513 students for the academic year 2019–2020, with 6,841 undergraduates and 1,672 graduate and law students making up the student body. The University of Massachusetts Dartmouth had 402 full-time faculty members as of the 2019–2020 academic year. In addition to Dartmouth College, the University of Massachusetts School of Law is located on the Dartmouth campus. According to the Carnegie Classification system, UMass Dartmouth is a "R2: Doctoral Universities - High research activity.
