ABOUT VIRGINIA COMMONWEALTH UNIVERSITY
Richmond, Virginia's Virginia Commonwealth Institution (VCU) is a public research university. As the medical division of Hampden-Sydney College, VCU was established in 1838. It changed its name to the Medical College of Virginia in 1854. MCV and the 1917-founded Richmond Professional Institute were combined to form Virginia Commonwealth University in 1968 by the Virginia General Assembly. Through VCU's 11 schools and three colleges, more than 31,000 students pursued 217 degree and certificate programmes in 2018. The university's goal of health care teaching, research, and patient care is supported by the VCU Health System. VCU, which is ranked among "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity" institutions, had sponsored research funding of a record $310 million in the fiscal year 2019. The university's research objective is supported by a wide range of centres and institutes of excellence that have been approved by the university and that include faculty from many different disciplines in the humanities, public policy, biotechnology, and medical breakthroughs. According to U.S. News & World Report, 28 graduate and first-professional programmes are among the top in the nation. The Division I athletic teams at VCU are collectively referred to as the VCU Rams. The Atlantic 10 Conference includes them as participants. The provost of the university currently resides in the Ginter House, one of the oldest structures on the VCU campus.
