ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF THE CUMBERLANDS
The University of the Cumberlands is a private school in the Kentucky town of Williamsburg. It was started by Baptist ministers in 1888 and was called Cumberland College until 2005. At that time, the university changed its mascot from an Indian to a Patriot. There are about 13,000 students at the university. The University of the Cumberlands was founded on January 7, 1889. It was first called the Williamsburg Institute. At the Mount Zion Association's annual meeting in 1887, people from 18 eastern Kentucky Baptist churches talked about how to get higher education to the Kentucky mountains. On April 6, 1888, the Kentucky state legislature made the college official. In 1907, the school bought three buildings from Highland College. In 1913, the name of the school was changed from Williamsburg Institute to Cumberland College.
