Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania is home to the Carnegie Mellon University (often known as CMU), a prestigious private research institution. The Carnegie Institute of Technology and the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research came together to form what is now known as the university as a result of their merger. The predecessor was established in 1900 by Andrew Carnegie as the Carnegie Technical Schools, and it became the Carnegie Institute of Technology in 1912 and began granting four-year degrees. The Mellon Institute of Industrial Research was established in 1913 by Andrew Mellon and Richard B. Mellon. Prior to their founding, the institute was a component of the University of Pittsburgh. In 1967, the Carnegie Institute of Technology amalgamated with the Mellon Institute of Industrial Research. Since the two schools merged into one, Carnegie Mellon has functioned as a single institution. The university is home to seven colleges and independent schools, including the College of Engineering, College of Fine Arts, Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences, Mellon College of Science, Tepper School of Business, Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy, and the School of Computer Science. The Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences is the only college at the university that focuses on the humanities and social sciences. The primary campus of the university can be found approximately five miles (eight kilometres) from the central business district of Pittsburgh. In addition, the university has over a dozen degree-granting locations across six continents, including campuses that award degrees in Qatar and Silicon Valley. Carnegie Mellon University is well-known for its contributions to the advancement of research and the development of new areas of academic study. The university is particularly well-known for being the birthplace of many firsts in the field of computer science (including the first computer science, machine learning, and robotics departments), for being a pioneer in the field of management science, and for having the first drama programme in the United States. In the year 2020, the university's spending on research and development (R&D) totaled 386 million dollars. Twenty people who have won the Nobel Prize, thirteen people who have won the Turing Award, twenty-six members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, thirty-nine fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, ninety-one members of the National Academies, one hundred and forty-two Emmy Award winners, fifty-two Tony Award laureates, and twelve Academy Award winners are among the faculty and alumni of this institution. Carnegie Mellon University has numerous campuses with a total enrollment of 15,818 students from 117 different countries, employs more than 1,400 teaching staff members, and boasts an active alumni network of over 112,000 people.
