Elgin, Illinois is home to the evangelical Judson University, which is a private institution. It first opened its doors in 1913. The liberal arts department of Northern Baptist Theological Seminary eventually gave rise to the establishment of Judson University. Following the relocation of the seminary from Chicago to Lombard, Illinois, it was decided to split the college and the seminary into two distinct institutions. It was once known as Judson College, and it was named after Adoniram Judson, who was the first American Baptist missionary to go to a country that was not in the United States. The university has locations in Elgin and Rockford, both in the state of Illinois, and has roughly 1,300 students enrolled. On August 28, 2007, Judson College was officially renamed Judson University.
