ABOUT
Phoenix, Arizona is home to Grand Canyon University (GCU), a Christian-affiliated private university that also operates for profit. In 2018, Grand Canyon University had 20,000 students attending classes on campus and 70,000 students taking classes online, making it the largest Christian university in the world based on total student enrollment. On August 1, 1949, the Arizona Southern Baptist Convention established Grand Canyon in Prescott, Arizona, under the name Grand Canyon College. Grand Canyon University was originally known as Grand Canyon College. The university severed its ties with the Southern Baptist Convention during the 1999–2000 academic year. As the early part of the 21st century progressed, the institution encountered a variety of challenges, including financial ones. In January 2004, the school's trustees gave their approval for the institution to be sold to Significant Education, LLC, a company based in California. This transaction established the institution as the first Christian college in the United States that is operated for profit. As a result of that purchase, the university made history by becoming the first and only for-profit institution to compete in the NCAA's Division I sports. In 2018, the university was granted permission by its regional accreditor, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), and the Arizona State Board for Private Postsecondary Education to revert back to its previous status as a non-profit educational institution. However, despite the university's request to be reclassified as a non-profit organisation, the United States Department of Education has continued to categorise the institution as a for-profit organisation. Grand Canyon Education, Inc. (formerly Significant Education), which is a for-profit, publicly traded online programme management corporation, partners directly with the university operations to provide bundled services for the university to run. These services are necessary for the university to function. Brian Mueller, who is the President of the University, is also the Chief Executive Officer of Grand Canyon Education. Through its nine colleges, the university provides a wide variety of educational opportunities for students, including doctoral studies, business, education, fine arts and production, humanities and social sciences, nursing and health care professions, science, theology, engineering and technology, and fine arts and production.
