ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT

In Storrs, Connecticut, a village in the town of Mansfield, the Institution of Connecticut (UConn) is a public land-grant research university. The main campus, which spans 4,400 acres (17.8 km2), is located in Storrs, about an hour's drive from Hartford and 90 from Boston. After two brothers who donated the site for the school, UConn was first established in 1881 as the Storrs Agricultural School. The college received a public land grant in 1893, and in 1939 it changed its name to the University of Connecticut. In the ensuing ten years, graduate, social work, and nursing programmes were all established, and the university also took in the law and pharmacy schools. UConn Health was developed in the 1960s to house additional medical and dental schools. In Farmington, John Dempsey Hospital debuted in 1975. The institution is categorised as one of the "R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity" institutions. As a Public Ivy, the university has been acknowledged. The Hartford, Connecticut/Springfield, Massachusetts regional economic and cultural collaboration association, often known as New England's Knowledge Corridor, was founded by UConn as one of its founding institutions. UConn was the second American university to be invited to join Universitas 21, a network of 24 research-intensive universities from across the world that collaborate to promote global citizenship. The New England Association of Schools and Colleges has granted UConn accreditation. UConn competes as the Huskies in the Big East Conference and has had great success with both its men's and women's basketball teams. 21 NCAA titles have been won by the Huskies. With a record 11 NCAA Division I National Championships (shared with the UCLA Bruins men's basketball team) and a women's record four in a row (2013–2016), plus more than 40 conference regular season and tournament victories, the UConn Huskies are the top women's basketball programme in the country. The two longest victory streaks by either gender in the annals of NCAA basketball belong to UConn.
