ABOUT GEORGE MASON UNIVERSITY
Fairfax County, Virginia is home to George Mason Institution, sometimes known as George Mason, Mason, or GMU. George Mason University is a public research university. In 1949, the institution of higher education was initially established as a northern extension of the University of Virginia. In 1959, the university was given its current name, George Mason University, in honour of one of the Founding Fathers of the United States. It did not become an autonomous university until 1972. Since then, the university has expanded to become the largest public institution of higher learning in the state of Virginia. Fairfax, Arlington, Front Royal, and Prince William are the four locations of Mason's campuses in the Commonwealth of Virginia. Mason also has a campus in Incheon, which is located in South Korea. The Fairfax campus serves as the primary location. The university is categorised as a "R1: Doctoral University – Very high research activity," according to the Carnegie Classification. James M. Buchanan in 1986 and Vernon L. Smith in 2002, both of whom taught economics at George Mason University, shared the honour of receiving the Nobel Prize in Economics during their careers there. On the campus of Fairfax there is a performance facility and arena called EagleBank Arena. It has a capacity of 10,000 people and is administered by the university. The university grants recognition to a total of 500 student organisations, including 41 different fraternities and sororities.
