ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA RIVERSIDE
In Riverside, California, there is a public land-grant research institution known as the University of California, Riverside (UCR or UC Riverside). It is one of the University of California system's 10 campuses. The main campus occupies 1,900 acres (769 ha) in a Riverside suburb, while a satellite campus in Palm Desert has 20 acres (8 ha). The UC Citrus Experiment Station, Riverside, the forerunner to UCR, was established in 1907 and is credited with pioneering research in biological pest management and the use of growth regulators, which led to the extension of the citrus growing season in California from four to nine months. Riverside is home to some of the most significant research libraries in the world for entomology, science fiction, photography, and citrus diversity. The College of Letters and Science at UCR first welcomed students in 1954. Graduate students were allowed to enrol at UCR in 1961 after the University of California Regents proclaimed it a general campus of the system in 1959. Since 1999, more than $730 million has been committed in new development projects to support an enrollment of 21,000 students by 2015. The UC Riverside School of Medicine received preliminary accreditation in October 2012, and the first cohort of 50 students began classes there in August 2013. In 40 years, this is the only brand-new public medical school that is research-based. R1: Doctoral Universities - Very High Research Activity is how UCR is categorised. UCR is ranked 83rd overall and tied for 33rd among top public colleges in the 2022 U.S. News & World Report Best Colleges rankings, and is ranked first for social mobility for the third consecutive year. Based on peer review, student selection, financial resources, and other variables, over 27 of UCR's academic programmes, including the Graduate School of Education and the Bourns College of Engineering, are highly regarded nationwide. Washington In terms of social mobility, research, and volunteerism, Monthly placed UCR second in the country, and U.S. News listed UCR as having the 15th most diverse student body in the country based on the percentage of undergraduates who received Pell Grants (42 percent). Regardless of income disparities, more than 70% of UCR students graduate in less than six years. Numerous outreach and retention initiatives at UCR have helped to establish it as a "university of choice" for minority students. The first public university campus in the US to provide a gender-neutral housing option was UCR in 2005. The Highlanders, UCR's sports teams, compete in Division I of the Big West Conference of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA). Their moniker was inspired by the campus's high elevation, which is a result of its location at the base of Box Springs Mountain. In 2006 and 2007, the UCR women's basketball team won back-to-back Big West titles. Since the university's transition to Division I in 2001, the men's baseball team has made two trips to the regionals, winning its first conference championship in 2007.
