Fort Collins, Colorado is home to Colorado State University, also known as Colorado State or CSU. This institution is a public land-grant research university. It is the primary and most prestigious institution within the Colorado State University System. The Doctoral Universities with Very High Research Activity category includes Colorado State University as one of its members. Between the years 1870 and 1935, this institution was known as Colorado Agricultural College, and between 1935 and 1957, it was referred to as Colorado A&M University. In 2018, there were around 34,166 students enrolled, which includes students receiving instruction from both resident and non-resident instructors. The university's eight colleges and fifty-five academic departments are home to the majority of its around two thousand teaching staff members. Alumni of Colorado State University have gone on to become astronauts, CEOs, Pulitzer Prize winners, and even two past governors of Colorado.
