ABOUT AUBURN UNIVERSITY
Auburn University, also known simply as Auburn, is a public research university that was established in 1856 as a land-grant institution. Auburn University is the state's second largest educational institution, boasting a total enrollment of over 30,000 students, including more than 24,600 students enrolled in the university's undergraduate programme, and a faculty of 1,330. It is considered to be one of the two most prestigious public universities in the state. The university has produced 5 Rhodes Scholars and 5 Truman Scholars among its graduates, earning it a place in the "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very High Research Activity" category of universities. On February 1, 1856, East Alabama Male College, a private liberal arts institution that was affiliated with the Methodist Episcopal Church, South, received its charter to become what is now known as Auburn University. It was renamed the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Alabama in 1872 when it became the first land-grant university in the state of Alabama as a result of the Morrill Act, which was passed in 1872. It was the first four-year coeducational school in Alabama in 1892, and in 1899 it was renamed Alabama Polytechnic Institute (API) to reflect its changing mission. In 1892, the school became the first four-year school in Alabama. It was rechristened Auburn University in 1960 to reflect the extensive range of academic offerings and broadened scope of study that are characteristic of major universities.
