ABOUT UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA BERKELEY
Berkeley, California is home to the world-renowned public land-grant research institution known as the University of California, Berkeley (UC Berkeley). It was the first land-grant institution in the state of California and the first campus to be established as part of the University of California system. The University of California was founded in 1868. There are around 31,800 students enrolled in the institution's undergraduate programmes, and there are 13,200 students enrolled in the institution's graduate programmes. The University of California, Berkeley, has been frequently named among the top universities in the world. In addition to being a pioneer in the Association of American Universities, the University of California, Berkeley, is home to a number of outstanding research institutes in the fields of science, engineering, and mathematics. It established and continues to maintain close relationships with three national laboratories located in Berkeley, Livermore, and Los Alamos, and it has played a prominent role in a wide variety of scientific advancements, ranging from the Manhattan Project and the discovery of 16 chemical elements to advancements in computer science and genomics. Political activism and the Free Speech Movement of the 1960s are two other things that have made Berkeley famous. Berkeley's sporting teams, who compete predominantly in the Pac-12 Conference as the California Golden Bears, have won 107 national championships, while the university's students and alumni have earned 223 Olympic medals (including 121 gold medals). It is affiliated with 34 Pulitzer Prizes, 19 Academy Awards, and more MacArthur "Genius Grants" (108) and National Medals of Science (68) than any other public institution in the country. Among its alumni, faculty, and researchers, Berkeley has more Nobel laureates, Turing Award winners (25), Fields Medalists (14), and Wolf Prize winners (30) than any other public university in the country. The university is responsible for the education of seven current or former presidents of state or government, as well as six chief justices, including the Chief Justice of the United States Earl Warren; 22 cabinet-level officials; 11 governors; and 25 billionaires now in existence. In addition to this, it is one of the most prominent producers of Fulbright Scholars, MacArthur Fellows, and Marshall Scholars. Alumni of the University of California, Berkeley have established a number of illustrious businesses, including Apple, Tesla, Intel, eBay, SoftBank, AIG, and Morgan Stanley, and are internationally regarded for their entrepreneurial spirit.
