University College Cork – National University of Ireland, Cork (UCC) is a university that is a part of the National University of Ireland and can be found in the city of Cork. The Queen's University of Belfast was established in 1845 as one of three Queen's Colleges in Ireland's other major cities of Cork and Galway. In accordance with the Irish Universities Act of 1908, it was renamed University College of Cork. Both the Universities Act of 1997 and a Ministerial Order of 1998 renamed the university; however, it is still almost universally known as University College Cork. The Sunday Times has given the institution the title of Irish University of the Year on five separate occasions, the most recent of which was in 2017. The university has also received a number of additional rankings and honours. UCC was also recognised as the best performing university in 2015 by the U-Multirank system, which is funded by the European Commission. This recognition was based on the fact that UCC obtained the highest number of "A" scores (21 out of 28 metrics) among the field of 1200 participating universities. Additionally, in 2011, UCC made history by becoming the first institution in the world to meet the ISO 50001 standard for energy management.
