ABOUT FLORIDA AGRICULTURAL & MECHANICAL UNIVERSITY
Tallahassee, Florida is home to the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (often known as FAMU), a public historically black land-grant university. It was established in 1887, and now it holds the distinction of being the only publicly funded historically black institution in the state of Florida. Its enrollment ranks it as the third largest historically black university in the United States. It is accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools to confer baccalaureate, master's, and doctoral degrees, in addition to being a land grant university and a member institution of the State University System of Florida. In addition, it is one of the state's universities that provides land grants to its students. The athletic teams of FAMU are collectively referred to as the Rattlers, and they play in Division I of the NCAA. They compete in the Southwestern Athletic Conference, which is a regional college sports organisation (SWAC).
