ABOUT NEW YORK UNIVERSITY
New York University, abbreviated as NYU, is a prestigious private research institution located in New York City. NYU was established in 1831 by a group of New Yorkers led by Albert Gallatin, who was serving at the time as Secretary of the Treasury. The university received its charter from the New York State Legislature in 1831. The non-religious school for men only held its first classes in 1832, and they were based on a curriculum that emphasised a secular education. The school was located close to City Hall. Following its relocation in 1833, the university established its primary campus in the area of Greenwich Village that surrounds Washington Square Park. Since that time, the university has expanded by opening graduate schools all over Manhattan in addition to establishing a school of engineering in Brooklyn's MetroTech Center. The number of students enrolled at New York University in 2019 was 51,848. This included 26,733 students studying at the undergraduate level and 25,115 students studying at the graduate level, making NYU the largest private university in the United States in terms of enrollment. In addition, New York University receives more applications than any other private university or college in the United States, making it one of the most competitive schools for admission. The College of Arts and Science, the Gallatin School, the Steinhardt School, the Stern School of Business, the Tandon School of Engineering, and the Tisch School of the Arts are just a few of the ten undergraduate schools that make up New York University. The Grossman School of Medicine, the School of Law, the Wagner Graduate School of Public Service, the School of Professional Studies, the School of Social Work, and the Rory Meyers School of Nursing are just some of the 15 graduate schools that make up New York University. The Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, the Center for Data Science, the Center for Neural Science, the Clive Davis Institute, the Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, the Institute of Fine Arts, and the NYU Langone Health System are all examples of academic centres that are housed within the university itself. New York University is a global university with campuses that award degrees in Abu Dhabi and Shanghai as well as academic centres in Accra, Berlin, Buenos Aires, Florence, London, Los Angeles, Madrid, Paris, Prague, Sydney, Tel Aviv, and Washington, D.C.
