ABOUT TOURO COLLEGE
1. Touro University is a New York City-based private Jewish university. Rabbi Dr. Bernard Lander founded it in 1971 and named it after Isaac and Judah Touro. The Touro University System includes it. Its mission is "the transmission and perpetuation of the Jewish heritage." 2. Bernard Lander, an Orthodox rabbi and academic sociologist, named Touro College after his father, an Orthodox rabbi, and his son, a businessman and philanthropist, Isaac Touro. 3. Lander's goal was to equip Jewish people with an education that combined professional courses with Torah study. The Board of Regents of the State of New York granted the college its licence as a private, four-year liberal arts college in 1970, and it opened its doors in 1971. It had thirty-five students in its inaugural year, all of whom were men. In 1974, a section dedicated to women was established. The Middle States Commission on Higher Education accredited the college in 1976, and it was reaffirmed in 2015.
