ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA STATE UNIVERSITY
Raleigh, North Carolina is home to North Carolina State University (NC State), a public land-grant research university. It was established in 1887 and is currently the largest university in both North and South Carolina. It is a part of the University of North Carolina system. Along with Duke University in Durham and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, this institution makes up one of the three universities that comprise what is known as the Research Triangle. It falls under the category of "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity." On March 7, 1887, the North Carolina General Assembly established what is now known as North Carolina State University, which was originally a land-grant college under the name North Carolina College of Agriculture and Mechanic Arts. The institution went through a number of rebrandings before finally becoming known as North Carolina State University at Raleigh in 1965. However, in keeping with a long-standing tradition, the "at Raleigh" portion of the name was dropped. More than 35,000 students are currently enrolled at NC State, placing it among the universities with the largest student bodies in the United States. In addition to offering bachelor's degrees in 106 different areas of study, North Carolina State University is historically strong in the fields of engineering, statistics, agriculture, life sciences, textiles, and design. The graduate school confers the Master of Science degree in 104 different areas of study, the Doctor of Philosophy degree in 61 different areas of study, and a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. The Wolfpack is the name of all of NC State's varsity athletic teams. In 1922, a dissatisfied fan gave the school its current name after describing the behaviour of the student body at athletic events as being "like a wolf pack." This led to the naming of the student body. They have competed in NCAA Division I and won a total of eight national championships, including two NCAA championships, two AIAW championships, and four titles won under the auspices of various other sanctioning bodies.
