In Santa Cruz, California, there is a public land-grant research institution known as the University of California, Santa Cruz (UC Santa Cruz or UCSC). It is one of the University of California system's 10 campuses. The campus is situated on 2,001 acres (810 hectares) of forested hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean in Monterey Bay, just outside the coastal town of Santa Cruz.
