Tuscaloosa, Alabama is home to the University of Alabama, also referred to informally as Alabama, UA, or Bama. This institution is a public research university. The University of Alabama is the flagship institution of the University of Alabama System. It was founded in 1820 and began accepting students in 1831. The University of Alabama holds the distinction of being the state's oldest and largest public university. It falls under the category of "R1: Doctoral Universities – Very high research activity." The university features educational programmes in a total of thirteen academic divisions, each of which can lead to a bachelor's, master's, education specialist's, or doctoral degree. The University of Arizona is home to the only law school in the state that receives funding from the public. Other academic programmes that are only offered at the University of Alabama include doctoral programmes in anthropology, communication and information sciences, metallurgical engineering, music, Romance languages, and social work. These programmes are not offered anywhere else in Alabama. The University of Alabama, which was founded in the early 19th century on the southwestern frontier of the United States and was one of the first public universities in the country, has left a cultural imprint not only on the state of Alabama but also on the region and the country as a whole over the past two centuries. During both the American Civil War and the movement for civil rights, the school served as a hub of activity in the community. Since its beginning in 1892, the University of Alabama's varsity football team, known by its nickname, the Crimson Tide, consistently ranks among the top ten winningest programmes in the annals of United States athletics. During his tenure as president, George H. Denny gave a speech in 1913 in which he praised the university, praising it as the "capstone of the public school system in the state [of Alabama]." As a result, the university is now commonly referred to as "The Capstone." In addition, there are 59 Goldwater Scholars, 15 Rhodes Scholars, 16 Truman Scholars, 36 Hollings Scholars, and 16 Boren Scholars among the university's alumni and faculty.
