ABOUT JOHNS HOPKINS UNIVERSITY

Johns Hopkins University, also referred to as Hopkins University or JHU, is a prestigious private research institution located in Baltimore, Maryland. Johns Hopkins, an American industrialist and Quaker philanthropist, was the institution's initial sponsor and gave the university its name when it opened its doors in 1876. The title of "oldest research university in the United States" belongs to Johns Hopkins. The $7 million bequest that Johns Hopkins left to the university in order to found it was the largest philanthropic gift in the history of the United States up to that point. It was on February 22, 1876, when Daniel Coit Gilman became the first president of Johns Hopkins University. Under his leadership, the university revolutionised the system of higher education in the United States by combining research with classroom instruction. In the year 1900, Johns Hopkins University joined the American Association of Universities as one of its founding members. For the past three decades, the university has maintained its position as the top spender on annual research among all universities in the United States. This academic institution is consistently regarded as one of the best in the world. On its campuses in Maryland and Washington, District of Columbia, as well as its foreign locations in Italy and China, Johns Hopkins University is structured into ten distinct divisions. On the Homewood campus, which is located in the Charles Village district of Baltimore, the Zanvyl Krieger School of Arts and Sciences and the Whiting School of Engineering are the two undergraduate schools that the university offers. On the site of the Medical Institutions in East Baltimore are the medical school, the nursing school, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, and the Johns Hopkins Children's Center. In addition, the institution includes the Paul H. Nitze School of Advanced International Studies, the Peabody Institute, the Applied Physics Laboratory, the School of Education, the Carey Business School, and a variety of other buildings and resources. Additionally, the university maintains graduate campuses in the cities of Italy, China, and Washington, District of Columbia. As of the month of October 2019, Johns Hopkins University's faculty and graduates have been associated with the work of 39 Nobel laureates and one Fields Medalist. Since it was established in 1883, the men's lacrosse team for the Blue Jays has gone on to win 44 national championships. They are currently an affiliate member of the Big Ten Conference. The remainder of the university's athletic programmes are members of the Centennial Conference and participate in Division III of the NCAA.
