ABOUT CALIFORNIA INSTITUTE OF THE ARTS

Santa Clarita, California is home to the prestigious private art university known as the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). It was the first degree-granting institution of higher learning in the United States to be established specifically for students of the visual and performing arts, and it was established in 1961 when it became a corporation. Through its six schools—Art, Critical Studies, Dance, Film/Video, Music, and Theater—it confers the degrees Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Fine Arts, Master of Arts, and Doctor of Musical Arts. Other degrees offered include Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts. In the early 1960s, a number of influential individuals, such as Nelbert Chouinard, Walt Disney, Lulu Von Hagen, and Thornton Ladd, had the idea to establish a school. At the time, these individuals recruited a diverse group of professionals to work at the school. Within the context of a creative workshop, students at CalArts generate their own work, which they own and over which they maintain control and copyright.
