In the city of Florence, Alabama, there is a public university known as the University of North Alabama (UNA). It has the distinction of being the state's first public university. UNA is located in a four-city area that also includes Tuscumbia and Sheffield in addition to Muscle Shoals, and occupies a campus that is approximately 130 acres (0.5 km2) in size in a residential neighbourhood of Florence. A metropolitan region with a total population of 140,000 people is formed by the four cities that make up the area. LaGrange College, which would later become the University of North Alabama, was established in the year 1830. It was reestablished in 1872 as the first teachers institution south of the Ohio River to receive financial assistance from the state. One year later, it was one of the first colleges in the country to welcome both male and female students.
