FAST FACTS

The iconic Golden Dome, a symbol of the university, is actually made of copper, which has been tarnished and gilded over time to give it its distinctive golden hue.

The university's athletic teams are nicknamed the "Fighting Irish," a moniker adopted in the early 1920s to honor the school's many Irish American students and alumni who served in World War I.

Seven Notre Dame alumni have won Pulitzer Prizes, including novelist John Updike and journalist William Least Heat Moon.
