ABOUT GEORGETOWN UNIVERSITY
In Washington, D.C.'s Georgetown area, there is a private research university called Georgetown University. The institution, originally known as Georgetown College when it was founded by Bishop John Carroll in 1789, has expanded to include 10 undergraduate and graduate schools, including the Walsh School of Foreign Service, McDonough School of Business, Medical School, Law School, and a campus in Qatar. Healy Hall, the school's signature building and a National Historic Landmark, stands out on the main campus, which is perched on a hill above the Potomac River. Although most of the students are not Catholic, the university was founded in the Jesuit tradition and is the oldest Catholic institution of higher learning in the United States. Georgetown is one of the best universities in the country, and admission is quite competitive. The school enrols an average of 7,500 undergraduate and 10,000 graduate students from more than 135 nations and provides degree programmes in forty-eight areas. The men's basketball team at the institution, known as the Hoyas, has won a record eight Big East titles, participated in five Final Fours, and claimed a national title in 1984. Among Georgetown's noteworthy graduates are 14 foreign heads of state, international royalty, 32 Marshall Scholars, 33 Truman Scholars, 429 Fulbright Scholars, 2 U.S. Presidents, and 27 Rhodes Scholars. More American diplomats than graduates of any other university as well as several members of the US Congress are among the alumni of one of the world's top universities for study of politics and international relations.
