Clarksville, Tennessee is home to a public institution of higher education known as Austin Peay State University. The predecessor to the current university was founded in 1927 and named after Governor Austin Peay, who was serving as governor at the time. In further homage to Governor Peay, the current university's athletic teams are called the "Governors." The land on which the university is located has been used by a series of educational institutions dating back to 1845. Since May 2017, the Austin Peay State University Board of Trustees has been in charge of the university, despite its previous affiliation with the Tennessee Board of Regents. The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) granted accreditation to the university, and in 2012, it was the university with the most enrollment growth in the state of Tennessee. In 2019, Austin Peay University reached an official enrollment milestone of 11,000 students.
