Industry experts call for unity to reset international education sector

The leaders in Australia's international education sector are calling for a united front to address uncertainties caused by recent migration system changes. Phil Honeywood, CEO of the International Education Association of Australia, emphasized the need for the sector to shape the narrative proactively rather than reacting to policy changes. He suggested a public campaign similar to the mining industry's successful efforts, highlighting the sector's benefits and job creation. Rongyu Li, deputy vice-chancellor at the University of Queensland, pointed out challenges from knee-jerk policy changes, such as increased student visa scrutiny and a cap on international students, and stressed the need for universities to lead in policy development. Colin Grant, deputy vice-chancellor of Global UNSW, highlighted the importance of promoting the sector's research contributions and collaborating with various stakeholders. Linda Brown, president and CEO of Torrens University, argued for leveraging Australia's reputation as a quality transnational education provider to build respect and trust. The leaders aim to ensure the sector's future by taking a proactive and assertive role in shaping policy and public perception.
