Labor vows to “welcome international students” to the UK
UK Labor Party's Plan to Attract More International Students
Labor vows to “welcome international students” to the UK
On BBC's Today, Phillipson acknowledged international students' economic and soft power benefits, affirming the Graduate Route visa's continuation under the Labor government. She criticized the previous Conservative government for unnecessary conflicts with the sector and emphasized the need for proper regulation. Phillipson did not dismiss the possibility of raising tuition fees with inflation and clarified that the government would not be a "lender of last resort" for universities. The significant drop in UK study visa applications, attributed to rules banning masters-taught students from bringing dependents, has led to financial difficulties for universities. The situation has prompted job and course cuts, with universities heavily reliant on international students from China, India, and Nigeria, whose recruitment has been affected by Nigeria's dependents ban and currency devaluation. Viviene Stern, chief executive of Universities UK, called for a positive government statement on welcoming universities and continuing the Graduate Route.
