UGC asks institutes to appoint Gender champions for equal opportunities
The University Grants Commission (UGC) is taking a proactive stance on promoting gender equality within educational institutions by advocating for the appointment of Gender Champions. These champions, as per the mandate of Article 15 of the Indian Constitution, play a pivotal role in fostering a culture of respect and dignity for all students.
With the objective of cultivating inclusivity across schools, colleges, and academic institutions, the UGC has underscored the importance of engaging Gender Champions. These individuals, regardless of their gender and age above 16, are entrusted with the responsibility of championing gender equality initiatives within their respective educational settings.
According to the UGC guidelines established in 2015, Gender Champions are envisioned as influential leaders who facilitate an environment where all genders are treated with dignity and respect. Their role is crucial in promoting positive social norms and sensitizing young individuals to gender-related issues.
"The goal is to instill gender sensitivity among young boys and girls and foster an environment that values and respects the rights of all genders," emphasizes a segment of the document outlining the objectives of the Gender Champion initiative.
