France Sees Surge in International Student Enrollment, Ranks 6th Globally.
France is making a name for itself as a global hub for higher education. With 412,000 international students enrolled in French universities last year, the country ranks 6th in the world for international student enrollment. This represents a 3% increase over last year and a 17% increase over the past 5 years. French higher education has long been a magnet for international students. The excellence of French universities and the unique cultural experience that comes with studying abroad in France have long been attractive to international students.
In the past, the majority of international students enrolled in France were European, African, and North African. However, in recent years, there has been an increase in the number of Indian students in France, which may be offsetting a decrease in the number of Chinese students. Not only is France a popular place to study for international students, but it also has a large number of French studying abroad (more than 105,000 students). This dual flow of international students strengthens France’s position in the world of education. Many French students prefer to study in neighboring and French speaking countries such as Belgium, Canada and Switzerland. France is also a major provider of Erasmus+, a student exchange program within Europe, which has seen a recent increase in participation.
