Balancing academics and menstrual cycles: New Leave Policy Aims to Support Female Students
Punjab University allows menstrual leave per month
Punjab University, situated in Chandigarh, has recently sanctioned menstrual leave for its female students. This initiative allows female students to request leave for menstrual reasons, subject to approval. Beginning from the upcoming semesters of the academic session 2024-25, this policy aims to support the well-being of female students during their menstrual cycles.
The decision to implement menstrual leave was endorsed by the Vice Chancellor of Punjab University. According to the approved proposal, female students are entitled to one day off per calendar month during teaching days, provided that at least 15 days of teaching have occurred within that month. Each student is permitted a maximum of four days of menstrual leave per semester, with the leave days restricted to teaching days only.
To ensure accountability, the number of lectures conducted on the day of leave will be added to the total lectures attended by the student at the end of each month. This measure aims to maintain academic integrity while accommodating the health needs of female students. However, it is important to note that students can apply for only one day of leave per month, and the leave cannot be divided into multiple days.
This progressive step by Punjab University reflects a commitment to gender equity and inclusivity in education. By acknowledging the unique challenges faced by female students during menstruation and providing them with the necessary support, the university strives to create a more supportive and accommodating learning environment.
